Antique French Silver Cloche & Serving Platter
Lift. Pause. Gasp. An object to serve suspense!
This lovely French silver-plated cloche was made for one moment: the second before the lid comes off, when the whole table leans in (and someone always guesses "roast chicken?").
It's neoclassical to its fingertips. An egg-shaped finial sits on a fluted rosette, and a fine ribbed band circles the rim. It has the composure of a maître d' who has seen everything.
A confession: dome and platter weren't born together. The dome bears a French silver-plate maker’s mark featuring a small lion and the number "20", the grams of silver used in its plating. The platter has a tiny "L." They are two separate French histories from the late 19th or early 20th century that met on our hunt and fit as if they'd been waiting for each other.
It wears its years honestly. This is silver plate over copper, and the copper blushes through at some places on the edges and around the finial. There are a few scratches and small nicks from decades of dinners that ran far too late.
The platter measures Ø 37 cm and the set stands 22 cm tall with the dome on. That's generous enough for a cheese course or a cake. Our personal favourite, though, is a heap of golden, salty fries (spoiler: not roast d serve the humblest dish with the grandest entrance. Because fries should be fabulous too!

A little note on photographing silver
Silver is a diva in front of the camera. It reflects everything: the room, the lights, and, if we're not careful, our surprised faces staring back at us (not the look we're going for). To keep the attention on the piece, we shoot with large screens around it to control the reflections. But all that shine has one side effect: fine scratches, small nicks, and gentle signs of wear can hide in the glare and be hard to see in the photos. We always do our very best to show every piece as honestly as possible. Before anything leaves us, we polish it by hand, so what arrives at your door is always a beautiful, weighty piece with the soft patina of an object that has been used for decades and is still loved today!
