On the 9th of May 1964, at the 17th Festival International du Film, the actress and Vogue Paris cover girl Carla Marlier did what every starlet on the Croisette dreamed of and none of them dared: she skipped the limousine and rode into Cannes on a dromedary. Straw boater, little black top, one very patient camel, one delighted handler. The press lost their minds. And somewhere in the crowd, a painter took note.
That painter was René Peyre — a true Montmartre character who kept his easel on the Place du Tertre through the heyday of the 1950s and '60s (when he wasn't playing trumpet in the fire brigade's marching band, but that's a story for another day). Peyre worked this scene up almost certainly from a press photograph, and honestly? We adore him for it. This isn't a museum piece pretending to be one. It's a gloriously silly, gloriously glamorous moment, caught in oil by someone who lived the era.
Signed lower left. And here's the charm: a little brass plaque set into the frame, engraved "Carla Marlier arrive à Cannes sur un dromadaire — par René Peyre, Collection Pierre Lascaux 1964." Provenance with a wink. It's the detail that turns a curiosity into a conversation piece.
Is it a masterpiece? Mais non. Is it completely irresistible? Absolument. Framed in soft linen and gently worn gilt, it's small enough for a gallery wall, a powder room, or the shelf where it will quietly steal the scene.

Please keep in mind that in many cases we sell vintage and antique pieces. None of these pieces should be considered new or in perfect condition.
All of our vintage products show the rich beauty and history of their life with the knocks and bumps of many years of use. We restore our pieces so they will be clean and in a good working condition. However we try to minimise restoration to keep every piece as original as possible.

The physical object can differ slightly in colour from the object as presented online. We have made every effort to display colours accurately, but cannot guarantee that the pictures accurately reflect the colour of those goods in real life.
Returns
If you wish to cancel, simply contact us at info@wildschut-antiques.com or through your customer account. We will guide you through the return process with care and clarity.
Items should be returned in their original condition and securely packaged. Return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer, unless otherwise agreed. Once the item has safely returned to us, we will process your refund promptly.
