Picture it: a crisp winter’s day, langlauf skis whispering through snow-dusted pines, the promise of something steaming (and possibly spiked) waiting at journey’s end. This joyous scene — all brisk movement and a hint of flirtation with frostbite — is brought to life in a dazzling oil by Yanev Anatoliy Nikitovich (b. 1945), circa 1980s.
The colours don’t just sit on the snow; they dance across it — bright, unapologetic strokes rebelling deliciously against the grey hush of winter. Because really, who said February can’t be fabulous?
What do we see here? Not merely skiers gliding through snow, but a wink, a nudge: yes, it’s cold — but the palette refuses to behave. A little haute-rustique, a little après-ski glam. In our world, this isn’t simply “a winter landscape” — it’s haute-rustique chic, a ski-jacket moment in the parlour of antiquity. We imagine it hanging beside a Louis XVI mirror, both looking rather pleased with themselves.
About the Artist: Anatoliy (Nikitovich) Yanev (b. 1945) paints as if colour were a living thing — leaping from the muted hush of a dark winter day to the blazing chorus of a Crimean sunrise. A graduate of the Kyiv National Art Academy, he has been a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine since 1988 and is widely regarded as one of the great colourists of the Kirovograd school.
His works grace the Kirovograd Art Museum and private collections across Ukraine, Poland, the United States, the Czech Republic, and Germany — proof that good taste travels.
In 2005, he received the Kirovograd Regional Prize for Fine Arts, and in 2013 the title “Honored Artist of Ukraine” was bestowed upon him — formal recognition for an artist who never quite played by formal rules.
