Where Light Learns to Dance
This striking graphic composition by Cuban-Spanish artist Waldo Balart (61 x 73 cm) dates from 1989 and belongs to his explorations of abstract geometry, light and colour. With its carefully balanced planes, architectural blocks and playful arrangement of tones, the work feels almost like a tiny cityscape from another dimension: orderly, precise, yet wonderfully full of movement.
Balart was fascinated by the hidden structures behind colour and light. In his celebrated series Código de la Estructura de la Luz (CEL), meaning “Code of the Structure of Light”, he transformed the colour spectrum into a personal visual language, using mathematical principles to create compositions where colour, space and form enter into a delicate conversation.
Although born in Cuba, Balart’s artistic journey took him from Havana to New York and eventually to Madrid, where he became one of the important voices of Concrete Art. Influenced by pioneers such as Josef Albers, Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondriaan, he searched for a pure visual language built not around storytelling, but around the poetry of shapes, colours and relationships.
Balart’s work is extremely precise, almost mathematical, but the magic of it is that the strict little universe of lines and colours starts to feel surprisingly alive. There is something wonderfully timeless about this piece: a small geometric stage where colours meet, separate and come together again. A work for lovers of modernist design, abstract art and interiors that enjoy a little intellectual sparkle on the wall.
About Waldo Balart
Waldo Balart (1931–2025) was a key figure in Concrete Art, with his work exploring colour, light and geometric structures. His work is held in collections including MoMA New York, Museo Reina Sofía Madrid and the Mondriaanhuis in Amersfoort.

Please keep in mind that in many cases we sell vintage and antique pieces. None of these pieces should be considered new or in perfect condition.
All of our vintage products show the rich beauty and history of their life with the knocks and bumps of many years of use. We restore our pieces so they will be clean and in a good working condition. However we try to minimise restoration to keep every piece as original as possible.

The physical object can differ slightly in colour from the object as presented online. We have made every effort to display colours accurately, but cannot guarantee that the pictures accurately reflect the colour of those goods in real life.
Returns
If you wish to cancel, simply contact us at info@wildschut-antiques.com or through your customer account. We will guide you through the return process with care and clarity.
Items should be returned in their original condition and securely packaged. Return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer, unless otherwise agreed. Once the item has safely returned to us, we will process your refund promptly.
