Set of Two Vintage Gien Majolica Plates in the Series Les Notabilités

Sale price€90,00

This is a superb set of two large majolica ceramic plates from the series "The Notabilities of the Law" (Les Notabilités de l'Endroit) by Gien. It is rare to find a set of these plates in such a good condition. The plates are hand-painted with charming depictions of a "Garde Champêtre" and "Madame La Mairesse."

A "Garde Champêtre" is a rural police officer or countryside guard in France. Historically, their duties included overseeing agricultural activities, protecting crops, ensuring compliance with hunting and fishing regulations, and maintaining general order in rural areas. They acted as law enforcement agents in villages and small towns, often dealing with minor offenses and conflicts. The role has largely been phased out or integrated into other law enforcement agencies, but it remains a notable part of rural French history.

"Madame La Mairesse" translates to "Madam Mayor" in English, refering to a woman who holds the position of mayor in a town or city.

The plates are in very good condition for vintage items. There are no cracks, though they do show some typical signs of use and indications of the ceramic production process.

The price is for the set of two.
