“Pose de Banderilles” — Drama, Dust, and a Dash of Nostalgia

No, we’re not aficionados of bullfighting—and we’d never cheer on the spectacle. But much like a vintage fur coat inherited from your great-aunt with scandalous taste, there are certain artefacts from the past that hold a strange, magnetic power. This painting is one of them. It’s all colour, character, and mid-century drama.

This striking 1970s piece, Pose de Banderilles, captures the moment just before the fall. The matador stands triumphantly, the crowd roars in approval, and the poor, weary bull has only just edged into the frame on the left—wobbly knees and all. It’s theatrical, textured, and just the right amount of retro.

We love the brushwork here—thick, juicy strokes like a palette knife went dancing across the canvas. The colours are warm, dusty, spicy—reds, ochres, blues—like a glass of Rioja spilled on sun-baked sand. You almost hear the castanets.

Signed by M. Marchand (perhaps Michel Marchand?) and dated 1970, this painting brings that graphic, bohemian flair we associate with Spanish souvenir posters, vintage cinema, and off-duty Picasso. It doesn’t ask to be understood. It simply owns the room.

For lovers of nostalgia, visual drama, and a bit of controversial charm. We can totally see it hanging in a rustic Spanish finca—whitewashed walls, terracotta tiles, and this punchy piece adding a bold splash of character.
