Louis XVI Style Yellow Painted Mirror Door Armoire
The Armoire That Stole the Sun
We must confess: we are not usually enthusiasts of painted antique furniture. More often than not, we fall head over heels for worn patina, faded finishes, and the gentle traces of time. But every now and then an armoire comes along with such beautiful proportions and elegant lines that it deserves a second chance. That was precisely the case here.
Beneath a rather uninspiring and tired finish hid a wonderfully shaped Louis XVI-style armoire, dating from the late 19th century. So we rolled up our sleeves and gave it a complete transformation. The result? An armoire that looks as though it has just returned from a very successful holiday in the South of France.
Painted in a rich, sun-drenched yellow, this piece radiates warmth and instantly brightens a room. It brings to mind ochre village facades, lazy Mediterranean afternoons, and shutters thrown open to let in the summer air. (In fact, we know exactly what effect it has, as this beauty currently resides in our own living room, where it stubbornly refuses not to be noticed.)
The two full-length bevelled mirror doors add both elegance and practicality, reflecting light beautifully while serving as generous dressing mirrors. Open the doors and you'll find original adjustable shelves and interior drawers, offering ample storage for clothing, linens, or treasured collections.
Decorating Magic
Mirror-door armoires possess a certain decorating magic. Most people immediately picture them in a bedroom, but they are surprisingly adaptable creatures. Place one in a hallway, dining room, kitchen, or living room and it will settle in quite happily. The beauty lies in its double life: part storage cabinet, part grand mirror. There is no need to find wall space for an additional mirror, as the armoire does the job itself. Meanwhile, the mirrored doors bounce light around the room, reflect beautiful corners of your interior, and create the illusion of extra space. A rather clever French invention, really, disguising practicality beneath a handsome façade.
Sunny Details
This sunny armoire has been carefully restored and painted. The locks and keys are in good working order, and the cabinet remains sturdy and functional throughout. The mirrored doors are in good condition. They display some light foxing consistent with age, while remaining wonderfully clear and highly functional.
Like any well-dressed French aristocrat, this armoire enjoys a little accessorizing. The decorative crest and side finials can be left in place for maximum grandeur or removed for a simpler, more understated look. It is also a useful option if your ceiling height is limited. To show the difference, we have included photographs of the armoire both with and without its decorative crown and finials.
Originating from France and dating to approximately 1880-1890, this is a piece that effortlessly combines decorative impact with everyday usefulness.
For ease of transport, the armoire can be dismantled into several sections.
