Antique French Gold Gilt Mirror with an Elegant Foliage Crest, Circa 1860-1880

This elegant large antique mirror originates from France and dates to around 1860–1880. The frame is crowned with a beautifully sculpted crest, richly decorated with scrolling foliage that lends the piece both height and presence.

The giltwood frame is structurally sound and finely detailed. Along the inner rim runs a classic “string of pearls” motif, a refined decorative element that subtly frames the mirror plate. Over time, delicate traces of the red bole beneath the gilding have softly emerged, creating a warm undertone that enriches the gold surface and highlights the finely carved leaf and floral ornamentation.

The mirror retains its original mirror plate and wooden backboards, a reassuring sign of authenticity. The glass remains remarkably clear, with only a few small, lightly weathered spots that gently speak of its age and history without distracting from the reflection.

Thanks to its generous scale, the mirror can be placed standing on the floor, where it functions beautifully as a full-length mirror while simultaneously acting as a striking decorative statement in a room. It can equally be hung on a wall or positioned above a fireplace, where its elegant crest and warm gilding create a wonderful focal point. This versatility allows the piece to adapt effortlessly to different interiors, whether used as a grand wall mirror or a freestanding decorative element.
