Elephants In The Circus Oil Painting by Toon Kelder

This captivating oil painting features a pair of elephants in the circus, signed by well known Dutch artist Toon Kelder (1894-1973) and beautifully presented in a giltwood frame.

Toon Kelder was among the many artists inspired by the Parisian avant-garde, developing a distinctive style in the early 20th century, driven by a continuous quest for innovation. His early work is somewhat in the style of the Bergen School, characterized by a robust realism in dark tones. In the 1920s, he created expressive works depicting flowers, figures, and nudes, often using his wife, Alexandrine, as a model. From the 1930s to 1945, his focus shifted to subtly stylized female forms rendered in soft, hazy tones, alongside scenes of horse riders and mythical figures set in lush landscapes. After 1945, he transitioned away from figurative art to concentrate on abstract creations, spending time in Antibes where he produced exquisite ink drawings. Around 1948, Kelder began creating his first sculptures.

This charming painting of elephants can be dated to the period between the 1930s and 1945, characterized by Kelder's use of soft, hazy tones. It almost feels like a study in shades of grey and brown. Since Kelder is better known for his paintings of horses during this period, this depiction of elephants can be considered quite rare.
