Aubusson Tapestry Chairs, Monsieur & Madame
Dashing Duo: “Monsieur & Madame” Aubusson Tapestry Chairs
Meet this perfectly poised pair of chairs, each with a woven story on its back: one bespoke gent, one elegantly dressed lady—perhaps Monsieur and Madame. Their tapestry backs are vibrant authentic Aubusson—handwoven in central France, a craft since the 14th century. These tapestries were once the height of haute interiors, adorning noble salons and grand country homes.
To honor their history, we replaced the seat upholstery (which had sadly given up) with soft velvet—complementing the tapestries while giving the chairs a fresh, contemporary look as well.
Sturdy Yet Sleek
The oak‑based frames—ebonized to a chic noir—are rock‑solid, with smoothly rolling castors and firm, comfortable seats.
A Story in Every Thread
The Aubusson tapestry backs are well‑worn in all the right places—displaying the soft patina of age and use, without losing an ounce of charm. The lady holds what looks like a riding crop, and her richly detailed outfit may well be a 17th-century riding costume. Her companion is dressed to match the era, in classic fashion: large head with feathers, a dashing cloak and the kind of poise that says he’s used to being painted.
Perfect Pair for Display or Seating
These statuesque chairs elevate any entryway or bedroom—and, bonus, they don’t hog space. Their straight backs keep interiors airy, not crowded.
Why Aubusson Tapestry on Chairs?
The Aubusson weavers had perfected furniture upholstery, creating richly pictorial strands that translated regal Rococo and pastoral scenes into everyday décor. These narrative fabrics added texture, sophistication, and a splash of storytelling to dining rooms and parlors alike.
Modern Use, Historic Heart
Whether you settle them in a minimalist nook or pair with modern drapery, these chairs bring sparkling contrast and historical flair. They’re not just seating—they’re conversation starters.
Condition notes
Structurally sound and ready for action—these chairs roll smoothly on their original castors. The seats have been reupholstered with care, now firm and comfortable for modern lounging. The Aubusson tapestry backs are in good antique condition, showing some gentle wear—just enough to whisper their age with grace.
