Coral Reverie: The Great Barrier Reef Matchbox

We’ve long been captivated by Archivist Gallery’s matchboxes—generously sized, beautifully designed, and perfect for lighting an entire constellation of candles in one elegant sweep.

This design, created in collaboration with the Natural History Museum, is inspired by the extraordinary illustrations of William Saville-Kent from The Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Saville-Kent (1845–1908), an English marine biologist, devoted his life in Australia to studying and illustrating the vibrant corals of the reef at a time when their biology was still largely mysterious. The result is a matchbox brimming with color, detail, and the wonder of the ocean’s hidden treasures.

Archivist Gallery
Founded in 1994 by Sarah and William Allardice, Archivist Gallery began by reviving exquisite prints from the archives of the Natural History Museum. Since then, they’ve collaborated with artists and archives worldwide, producing a stunning collection of prints, cards, and, of course, their collectible luxury matches.

Pro Tip: The long matches are perfect for deep, scented candles—no burned fingertips required.

Completely non-toxic, free from sulphur, zinc oxide, or any other nasties, these matchboxes are pure fire in both style and safety. Classic, practical, and delightfully fun, they make an exquisite gift for any occasion.
