19th C Black Vitrine Marriage Armoire
Amoire Noir: When Practicality Puts on Its Evening Wear
Meet the armoire that dresses better than most of us. Deep, inky, dark-as-midnight black — paired with a silhouette straight out of a French marriage tradition. It’s equal parts romance, utility, and a touch of rural swagger.
Originally born a solid marriage armoire, it has since been thoughtfully (and rather beautifully) transformed into a vitrine. And while we normally clutch our pearls at alterations… this one we happily applaud. The former wooden door panels now feature glass, turning the piece into a display dream — a stage for your treasures, curiosities, tableware or that stack of perfectly folded linens that deserves its own spotlight.
The Little Black Armoire
The black politour lacquer came to us already moody and glamorous, so we simply revived its glow. Now it shines again with a subtle, elegant sheen — picture a grand piano after a fresh polish.
Open the doors and you’re met with a surprise: a bold, fresh green interior. Yes, it’s a statement, but here’s the insider secret — an armoire this dark needs a lively interior. Otherwise everything inside disappears into oblivion. Green keeps your pieces visible, crisp, and beautifully framed.
The carvings on the doors and apron? Classic marriage-armoire shapes, but with a more rustic hand. Slightly rougher, more characterful, less precious — we love the confidence it gives the piece. A bit like wearing couture with combat boots.
Inside you’ll find four roomy shelves, ready to hold a generous amount of your favourite things — from dishware to books to the odd decorative extravagance you simply couldn’t resist.
Transport is easy enough: the armoire dismantles into its top, base, sides, doors, shelves, and back. A practical diva, if you will.
A cabinet for those who like their antiques with presence, practicality, and a little midnight magic.
