An \u003cstrong\u003eegg-shaped finial \u003c\/strong\u003esits on a fluted rosette, and a fine ribbed band circles the rim. It has the composure of a \u003cem\u003emaître d'\u003c\/em\u003e who has seen everything.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eA confession: \u003c\/em\u003edome and platter weren't born together. The dome bears a French silver-plate maker’s mark featuring a small lion and the number \"20\", the grams of silver used in its plating. The platter has a tiny \"L.\" They are two separate French histories from the \u003cstrong\u003elate 19th or early 20th century\u003c\/strong\u003e that met on our hunt and fit as if they'd been waiting for each other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt wears its years honestly. This is \u003cstrong\u003esilver plate over copper\u003c\/strong\u003e, and the copper blushes through at some places on the edges and around the finial. There are a few scratches and small nicks from decades of dinners that \u003cem\u003eran far too late.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe platter measures Ø 37 cm and the set stands 22 cm tall with the dome on. That's generous enough for a cheese course or a cake. Our personal favourite, though, is a heap of golden, salty fries (\u003cem\u003espoiler: not roast \u003c\/em\u003ed serve the humblest dish \u003cem\u003ewith the grandest entrance\u003c\/em\u003e. But all that shine has one side effect: fine scratches, small nicks, and \u003cem\u003egentle signs of wear\u003c\/em\u003e can hide in the glare and be hard to see in the photos. We always do our very best to show every piece as honestly as possible.
