A beautiful Indigo dyed ceremonial textile from Cameroon. Remarkable large piece of vintage “Ndop” indigo dyed and raffia stitched piece of fabric.
Hand spun, thick cotton, natural indigo cloth, circa 1950 – 1960. Amazing graphics.
“Ndop” which is a raffia, stitched-resist, indigo dyed, textile done primarily in Cameroon but also in other West African countries. Ndop textile from the Bamileke, Bamum, Bamenda people of Grasslands of Cameroon, Africa, mid-20th century. This is a handwoven cotton cloth decorated with bold resist dye technique designs in white on an indigo background. This is a prestige loin cloth used as a hanging or curtain to decorate the palace or the wall behind the king’s throne during ceremonies. Also worn as skirt by dancers at important events.
Can be used as a bed or sofa covering or makes a great wall hanging art piece.
