Set of two 19th Century antique mercury glass witches balls in yellow/gold and green.
Two witches balls, handblown glass with production imperfections. Very light foxing is beginning to form on the mirrored surfaces, more prominent on the underside of the green ball. France, circa 1880.
When hung each witch ball will be reflecting an entire room. The condition is largely what one would like and expect to find in original antique example with pitting and character marks. There are no cracks or damages to speak of. There are hanging loops present in addition to the crown attachments, to each.
Witches balls have a mysterious history with many fables and tales as to why and what they were actually used for – all of which are based around protecting or preventing evil spirits from the area they hung. Thus making them highly regarded lucky charms. The most common theory is that witch balls were hung in 18th and 19th-century windows to ward off evil spirits as it was believed that witches could be entrapped by their own reflection.
