Dolce & Gabanna’s Glamshop

July 8, 2014 | By |

dolcegabbana-menswear-flagship-store-in-milan-on-corso-venezia-1403773412-2 A new atelier decorated in the brand’s signature interiors mix of extravagance and modernity has been added to Dolce & Gabanna’s heritage location.

The launch of Dolce & Gabbana’s first atelier for bespoke menswear marks the completion of the Italian luxury fashion house’s meticulous restoration of its famous men’s store on the corner of Corso Venezia and Via della Spiga in Milan’s Quadrilatero d’Oro (GoldenQuadrilateral) shopping precinct.

Housed in the 16th-century palazzo that has been home to the men’s collections for years, the new Dolce & Gabbana Sartoria shares the site with a Dolce & Gabbana men’s shoe boutique, women’s accessories boutique and the company’s multi-brand Spiga 2 store — plus its Barbiere barbershop, Beauty Farm spa, and Martini Bar and Bistrot. It opens onto a courtyard garden of citrus trees, palms, prickly pears and other species common to Sicily, the birthplace of Domenico Dolce and where he and Stefano Gabbana still have houses.

Inside, like the neighbouring accessories boutique and the brand’s men’s flagship store in London, the decor is a mix of neoclassical opulence and sleek mid-century modern design: angular wooden tables and shelving, velvet ottomans, oversized mirrors with gilded rococo frames, damask wall panels, enormous Venetian glass chandeliers, and marble and parquet flooring as far as the eye can see.

Flockhart Fabrics

February 24, 2014 | By |

858044_407262996030013_2086797454_o-1Flockhart Fabrics is an extraordinary collection of fabric designs from the 1940s and 50s being revived by Lucy Mackenzie, granddaughter of the original artists painter Eileen Guthrie and her sculptor husband George Kennethson. They hand-printed their designs from lino blocks and silk screens which still exist today, along with many other beautiful original pieces of fabric. While the designs were originally sold by Eileen at Primavera on Sloane Street, over the years the fabrics and blocks were carefully stored away and so it is that this beautiful archive of prints has remained largely unseen until now. We love it! No, we are in love with it!

Adam’s Family in Pink!

November 26, 2013 | By |

The Addams Family, consisting of Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Grandmama, Wednesday, Pugsley and Thing, began as a set of characters created by cartoon artist Charles Addams. Their popularity saw them adapted for TV, film and other media.

Almost everybody knows the Addams family in a creepy monochrome. Which makes these pictures all the more surprising, then – they indicate that the Addams family’s living room set was covered in pink, red, turquoise, and other decidedly non-Addams-family-ish colors.

There can be various reasons behind this striking contrast. Because the Addams Family was filmed in black and white, the colors for some of the items simply didn’t matter – if they found an object that looked just right for the set but was colored baby blue, they could still use it. Another reason was the way that black-and-white film registers certain colors when shooting. In other black-and-white films, characters often had to wear strange shades of lipstick (like brown or green) to get the right shades to appear on black-and-white film. As such, many of the color choices on this strangely colorful Addams family set were probably deliberate – they all came together to create the dark and quirky world.
